What makes this weekend special?
Tonight is the Captain’s President’s Cup Dinner, kicking off the weekend for the Senior Scratch Cup tomorrow!
The Senior Scratch Cup is one of our key events. We have a high quality field of players, with 50 players holding a handicap of 2 or better. Tomorrow morning, 78 of Ireland’s finest golfers will be teeing off at 8:00 am with a second round at 2:00 pm. The thirty top qualifiers will tee off on Sunday morning, with the Awards Presentation scheduled to take place Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m.
We have defending champions David O’Donovan, Keith Crowley and Gary O’Flaherty. We have ex-former-professional, Peter O’Keefe, who now runs a golf fitness gym, O’Keefe Golf Performance in conjunction with Dennehy’s. John Murphy, Kinsale, is one of this year’s favourites tipped to win. He played in St. Andrew’s only two weeks ago where he was the leader in round 1 and had a great performance. Jack Pierce from Port Marnock Golf Club is also playing. Jack was runner up in the West Ireland Championships this past Tuesday, which is ranked one of the top amateur events in the country.
We have a lot of the Munster panelists / interprovincial players competing tomorrow. The Scratch Cup is now a world ranking event for the second year, one of two in Munster. This year, we are holding the Scratch Cup three weeks later than usual, allowing the course to be at it’s peak and players to use the summer rules. “The course is in superb condition, getting better year on year, which is a credit to Jerry, David, Paul and the staff. It’s in superb condition” Vincent Drinan says of the course.
The Keohane family is honoured and proud to hold such a prestigious event. There are many people to thank for making this Senior Scratch Cup a reality. A huge thank you to the Lee Valley committee and all club members. We’d like to specially thank Vincent Drinan who has been coordinating the event for the past 9 years, and a very special thank you to our Head Greenskeeper James for keeping the course in such fantastic condition.
Lee Valley would like to extend a very special thank you to Dell EMC for sponsoring this event.
The event is open for the public to come and watch, and we’d like to extend a warm welcome to anybody interested in attending.
